A lot, as men?s hairdresser Jonathan Erik (@jonathanerik) tells it. ?With punk music, there aren?t a lot of outside rules,? says Jonathan, who started photographing punk shows when he was 13. ?Nobody can tell us what to do. It?s about the way we feel and the way we express ourselves ? and it?s the exact same thing with hair.? Since he first picked up a pair of shears at age 21, Jonathan?s creative motivation is to make his clients feel good about themselves. ?The haircut is about them, not about me,? says Jonathan, who lives in Riverside, California. ?Even with a regular client I?ve been cutting for years, I always cut hair with them facing away from the mirror, and at the end I turn them around for a grand reveal. That initial reaction is the most rewarding part for me ? being able to change someone?s day, their mood and the way they look in just 30 minutes.
