After winning a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics, American skier Gus Kenworthy (@guskenworthy) hit a personal low point. ?Competing with the red, white and blue flag behind you is a huge honor, but I wasn?t out yet. I wasn?t competing for the rainbow flag,? says Gus. ?I wasn?t representing the LGBTQ community, and I wasn?t representing my true self. It felt like a sham.? So, in 2015 Gus became the first reportedly openly gay action sports star. ?I thought it was maybe going to cost me my career, but it ended up being the complete opposite,? says the 26-year-old. ?After I made that decision, I didn?t miss a podium. But more important than any of the medals I?ve won or the accolades I?ve received is knowing that I?ve helped people in some small way. I want to be the person that I needed when I was in the closet, struggling to believe I could be anything I wanted to be.? ? This past weekend, Gus celebrated #Pride in New York City.
